Should I Let My Subject Preview the Interview

By Allena Tapia, About.com

Question: Should I Let My Subject Preview the Interview

Should you allow your interviewee to see the article before you turn it in?

Answer:

Generally, no. Allowing your subject to see your article beforehand is likely to cause problems- some as small as simple changes or clarifications, and some much larger. As long as you've done your due diligence, kept your recording, and checked your facts, there's no reason to let anyone but your editor see the final article prior to print.

Have I made exceptions? Yes. When I've written for a small, local community-focused magazine that does family histories, I've allowed the family to take a look ahead of time. I've done this mainly because of the subject matter. I've heard tell that other writers need interviewees to weigh in on complicated subjects, or have allowed particularly important interviewees to preview. When in doubt, as in most cases, let your editor have the final say.
