So, you want writing exercises? You want freelance inspiration? You want practical advice? Want to see it all done right before your eyes, and with a toddler on the hip? Hmm...you must want Writer Mama by Christina Katz.

So You Wanna See a Mama Do It All?

I must say, I don’t blame you. It’s quite a find to be able to get all the aspects of beginning your freelance magazine/journalism writing career in one book- especially if you are one of those multitasking mamas who have to read in snitches and sneaks, a half a page at a time.

What's Her Offer?

Not only does Katz easily and sensibly outline all the pieces and parts that you need to follow in order to see your byline one day, but she does it in such a warm tone that you’ll feel like you’re talking to your BFF. For example, when she mentioned The Incredibles, a movie that many moms have seen upwards of 50 times, I knew we were on the same wavelength, and that wavelength- where you are comfortable- is the one where you will best learn.

Add in the fact that you get quotes and guffaws from freelance well-knowns such as C. Hope Clark and Jenna Glatzer, along with directives such as “No earnings, no shopping sister!” (p 78), and you’ll end up stuffing your brain with all the necessary info without even realizing it.

Mamas will find ideas for the multitasking life such as “write when your toddler eats” (often a couple hours right there!), or “try un-napping” (a personal favorite). However, there are standard ideas and advice too. For example, Katz provides a comprehensive cover letter checklist that I’ve forged into my own version and put directly on my wall. You’ll end up doing the same thing with the multiple lists and charts she provides.

However, the very best part of Katz’s book is the loads of ideas and places to find ideas that you simply won’t get anywhere else. During the course of completing this book, I tripled my article idea bank, likely keeping me in constant querying and re-querying mode for the next 6 months. Yes, brainstorming techniques and suggestions include “What’s already on your hard drive?” and “What two interests can you join uniquely?”

Some Drawbacks

Katz's mama techniques are aimed at those with younger children. You're not likely to connect on that particular level if you have older children and different challenges. It is also important to note that this book focuses on freelance magazine and journalism writing. Those who aim to freelance in the biztech/corporate or copywriting arena will need to look elsewhere for such high caliber mom-spiration.

Bottom Line

Hands down, a treasure!
