Freelancers Union Announces New Insurance Plans
The Freelancers Union recently announced a massive change in insurance offered to members in the NYC area. The formation of the Freelancers Insurance Company, a health insurance provider owned by the non-profit Freelancers Union, replaces the Union's previous system of securing insurance options for its members through other insurance agencies.
The FIC now offers coverage under its own company solely for members of the Freelancers Union. Options range from three Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans that range from $753 to $1323 monthly for a family, to two High Deductible plans that kick in at $5,000 or $10,000 deductible and cost $745 or $466 per month for a family.
Today, health insurance is one of the main stumbling blocks for those looking to go into business for themselves. Although there are some choices for health insurance for freelancers, many of them are cost-prohibitive or allow only limited membership. The establishment of the Freelancers Insurance Company adds another viable choice to the pool.
