Professionals should EXPECT these rates

I list my writing services on a few freelance websites and noticed that some "clients" list insanely low rates ($4/article). I honestly thought they were typos! I saw these low offerings so frequently on these sites, at first I thought I had completely lost touch with today's market. But, I scored my first job the day I signed on, charged $110 for one article, was paid the same day, and immediately landed another project at $55/hr. PLEASE don't under sell our craft. If you're good, you'll get paid what your worth. Settling for less doesn't help anyone but you've got to have confidence in your skills. Writing ISN'T easy for most people so they WILL pay you to do it if you do it well. Math isn't my thing but my CPA buddy thinks math is easier than getting wet in the rain. He does my taxes, I write his annual report. Win, win.

Updated?

Are these updated for 2012? I just want to make sure that I'm not undercharging for my skills. Thank you. (Note from Allena: Yes Guest A, these are current for 2012.)

Freelancing is great

but it is hard to set the hourly rate if there is a stiff competition. It must be difficult to compete with other potential employees, who are willing to work for lower rate that you are trying to bid. I just hope there will be a freelancing site who will offer less rate than the popular sites and give them higher working salary. In that way, freelancer could earn and save more. Onkyo TX-NR708

My recommendation

Find someone else to write for. $4 for 600 words is lousy enough, but when they go back and then tell you to write more, that's plain dishonest. You don't want to work for someone like that, trust me.

Thanks for this

This was really useful for someone who is currently 're-visiting' her freelance writing finances. The only thing I disagree with are your article rates $15 - $50. I recently decided I'm not taking on any articles for less than $50, and the one ongoing client who is paying me slightly less than that per article will get a raised quote when that contract is next up for review. Articles are 'real' writing too. I don't think any of us should be writing them for $15.

Good rates- be nice to attain them.

Great bit of info. However I find that working as a Freelancer can be a lot of fun, however many times it is not very rewarding. For example, when you finally line up a project from a freelancer site, they want to pay one to four dollars for a 400 to 600 word article requiring research. Then once the send you the assignments, they have raised the word count to 650- 750 with no increase in pay. Any recommendations?
