Readers Respond: Viable Career? Pays the Bills?

Responses: 11

By , About.com Guide

What kind of money can you make freelance writing? Is it a viable career? Can it pay the bills? This is one of the number one questions that new freelancers have when they visit this site. Help them out by leaving your opinion? How much money do you make? How much money CAN you make? Are your bills paid? Would you recommend this career (from a financial standpoint)? Give Your Opinion

Yes, you can make money

I have been doing this part-time for about 6 months and I am now making a higher hourly rate than with my full-time job (and it's not minimum wage). You just have to do some research and be willing to learn. I have been working on the bid sites, but I pass by the very low jobs and choose ones that pay decent. I've also found other writing jobs. I expect to be able to quit my full-time job within a year and be making more money than I am now.

Can I Really Make Money Writing

I am not a professional or freelance writer, however, I do seem to have a talent for writing. I have prepared award winning grant proposals, successfully petitioned local governments to reconsider questionalble policy decisions and (most recently) attracted the (favorable) attention of a U.S. Congressman (Rep. Brian Higgins (D) of New York, regarding local waterfront development efforts in Buffalo, New York. While not wanting to impune the work of others, I am surprised at the grammatical and spelling errors present in some of the comments that have been submitted on this issue. In addition, a clear, concise and logical flow of ideas seems to be lacking in some of the comments. If this is the quality of writing that can make some folks up to $1,000 per month with a reasonable effort, I should have very little trouble doubling that amount, for my own efforts! (Note from Allena: I think many of the comments are submitted quickly and informally. In addition, some are from users who are continuing to learn English. These comments are not necessarily full time professional writers.)

A writer can earn large sums of money

Yes, I believe a professional writer can earn wonderful amounts of money doing what they love to do. If writers are creative, motivated and inspired to write, they can accomplish great writing assignments with lucrative pay. Writers has the advantage of using their writing style and knowledge to get the work done. A professional writer does not just write for the money, but for the passion of writing.

you're being unrealistic

I have been at this for 30 years. The only ones I knew who made 'good' money were probably staffers before freelancing. Most of the editors and writers I knew have disappeared off the face of the earth. We are back to a) be a staffer somewhere first if you can manage it or b) have a day job until your writing pays well. I have never seen such horror as people wanting an article for $1 when I used earn a $1 a word.

Making money as a freelance writer

Yes, you can make good money as a freelance writer. It just depends on the sub-sector you write for, how effective your marketing is, your ability to negotiate good rates for your business and your willingness/ability to collect payment once the job is done. There is a need for content. The trick is to sell to people who want to buy and have the funds to pay, and not waste time on people who are trying to get something for nothing.
