Hi Allena, Thanks for all your wonderful articles and valuable insight! I have a question: I am a writer and I want to know, at what point, in your journey, did you change from being "a writer" to having a "writing business," (branding, legally, etc). Did you reach an income level or work continuation level?
Thanks for the great question! Of course, this is somewhat opinion-based or maybe more of a personal story, but I'm happy to share with other writers what worked for me.
For one, my husband is an accountant, and noted that keeping my personal money separated from my freelance writing income would be a good move. My fellow Guide at About.com explains some of the reasons .
Another deciding factor was that I'd had large companies put out feelers, interested in hiring me, but they intimated that they preferred to work with larger "agencies" or LLCs. The LLC process in my state was relatively cheap and simple, so I went for it.
Other than that, since this is my full time job, I wanted to make it as legitimate and professional as possible. I did start freelance writing as a a part time "dabbler," though, so if I had to point to a specific point in time, I'd have to say that it was when I decided to do this as my full time career.</>
