By Allena Tapia, About.com

Definition: The writer's guidelines are a set of rules and policies that a publication requires you to follow. They are generally listed on a special page of the magazine's site, but may also be available only in print. The guidelines cover items such as submissions, formats, contracts, rights, and payment terms.
Also Known As: Contributors guidelines
Examples: I need to know how the editor wants my article formatted, so I will check the writer's guidelines on their website.
