Press Release Defined

By Allena Tapia, About.com

Definition:

A press release is a standard boilerplate media piece used to inform the media of an event, launch or news item. It comes in a rather simple format, but is molded in different ways by different people to try to garner attention and reporting.

Press releases act as a solid first piece for new freelancers, as they come in a standard format that has little room for negotiation or changes. In addition, they are a relatively short peice, and generally low priced. Companies are often willing to take a gamble on a new or unknown writer due to quick turnaround and low price of this project.

Examples: The company hired me to write and distribute a press release about its new project.
