Filler - What Exactly Is a Filler?

By Allena Tapia, About.com

Definition:

A filler is simply a smaller piece used to "fill space" that is open on a page. They generally occur in the FOB (front of book, the front of the magazine). Fillers can range anywhere from a few sentences to a 100-200 words, and pay anywhere from nothing to $75.

Also Known As: FOBs, although FOBs more accurately describes longer pieces (250+ words) that are in the front of a magazine.
Examples: I sent my filler into Readers Digest and was surprised with a check and a courtesy copy.
