Feature - Definition of a Feature

By Allena Tapia, About.com

Definition:

A feature is the main, or one of the main, stories in a magazine edition. Features are generally located in the middle of the magazine, and cover more than one or two pages. For this reason, the middle of the magazine is sometimes called the feature well, or just the well.

As a new freelancer, the well is a high place to aim, although not impossible. Break into a targeted publication through FOB pieces, meet your deadline, drum up a relationship with an editor, and then aim for the well.

Also Known As: feature, feature well, cover story
Examples: It took a year, but I've finally been assigned a feature piece!
