Definition: A clip is simply a sample of your writing. The name probably came from the fact that writers used to have to cut out (clip) their article from a hard copy for their portfolio. A clip can be of varying length and varying subject matter. Freelance writing jobs will usually indicate the kind of clip they want, whereas magazines like to see a clip similar to the article/field/genre/subject that you are proposing to write for them.
