Do Newspapers and Magazines Really Pay By the Inch?

By Allena Tapia, About.com

Question: Do Newspapers and Magazines Really Pay By the Inch?

I've ran into some reference to being paid by the printed inch. Does anyone still do this? What's that about?

Answer:

This is a great question, and I'm sure you're not the only one who was wondering such a thing.

Those looking into freelancing for newspapers should know that many newspapers today still pay by the column inch. A column inch is the square space of one column wide by one inch high. Many editors still use this method partly because ad space is still sold by this method, and, of course, because this is how layouts are done. However, perhaps the digital age has changed even this; I've noted many newspapers are paying by word or by line these days.
