Dear About Freelance Writing, I know that some magazines have stated policies on simultaneous submissions, but what if nothing is stated? Is there a "default" policy that freelance writers should know about? ~Kate
Dear Readers, Kate agreed to allow me to post her email as an FAQ, as it's a particularly good question. As stated, many magazines will indicate on their Submissions Page or within their Writer's Guidelines whether or not they accept simultaneous submissions, and/or how to handle those. For example, some editors will accept simultaneous submissions if the submission clearly notes that it's in consideration elsewhere.
But, like Kate asks, what if nothing is said? Is there a default practice? In general, I've known writers to follow their gut in this practice. Since my personal philosophy is one of quality and quantity, I personally do submit simultaneously as a practice. I'd counsel Kate to do the same. Produce many pitch submissions of high quality to bolster your chances of acceptance.
