Letter of Intro Instead of Query?

By , About.com GuideJune 21, 2010

Follow me on:

I got a great reader email about using Letters of Introduction directly to editors, as opposed to pitching ideas via queries. I tried this method out and picked up one new client- a trade magazine that sends regular work.

I think the method works because many trade magazines plan content in house. They already know what/who they want to cover, and they just want the reliable freelancer to do it.

What do you think of Letters of Introduction? Had any luck?

No luck getting work, BUT I did get very nice responses.

It’s nice to get the nice acknowledgment, but work attached to it would be good as well.

Yes. I wrote several LOIs to editors who work under one publishing umbrella and got one rather juicy assignment from it!

What a great idea. Would you consider sharing a sample? Do you write a colloquial form of your resume? Discuss areas of interest? Discuss the publication? Thanks
