When I wrote my article about the Top 15 Gifts for Writers and Readers, I didn't realize that suggesting an action figure of the writer's favorite author would indirectly feed into some odd behaviors. It seems that Scott William Carter, an author with an interesting blog and several books, actually speaks to his Poe figure. And then blogs those conversations. Funny! Although, since I regularly talk to my dog, Jack, throughout the lonely writing day, I guess I don't have a leg to stand on!
What do you do to combat the long writing hours? Anyone like to write at Starbucks?

I am a Starbucks junkie.
And yeah, Allena, that is a good question. Cause I have tried taking some of my writing to Starbucks … but it doesn’t work for me. I really can’t accomplish anything requiring mental focus (like writing) at Starbucks. Too much noise from the coffee making activities , too many conversations, and too many ‘interesting’ people coming and going …
So, I just mindlessly surf with my laptop and read … and enjoy that dark brew.
I am going to have to go get one right now … you put that thought in my head!!
My best writing tends to be done either at a coffee shop (preferably one wihout munchkins running around in it) or, in the wee hours of the night, a Dennys which blessedly has WiFi. There is something about having just enough of a buzz of conversation and interaction, no household distractions, and food that costs (rather than what is in the fridge free to graze) that keeps me alert and focused to write. My favorite Starbucks in Dubai was open until 2 a.m.–and if I timed it well, I got my fav table, hi buzz coffee, and maximum productivity!
Barnes and Noble for me. Closest bookstore to me, any bookstore would do. Surrounded by books and people who actually read. At home, the best time is early. Wife and I are retired, and she likes to sleep in. I get up at 5am and have a good 5 hours to myself, sometimes more.
