The question of quitting your day job to write comes into my mailbox in one form or another almost every day. How would you counsel someone who asked you such a thing?

As a full-time freelancer for more years than I care to count–and before that, the owner of a sales and service company–I tell those considering full-time self-employment to take off the rose-colored glasses and know the reality. It’s hard work. Be prepared to work long hours. Get educated about the industry and improve your own skill level every chance you get. Be able to market yourself, because no one else will. Most importantly, love what you are doing–don’t get into it just for the money. Having a passion for your chosen field will get you through the rough times, the downturns and the setbacks. My blog, The Writer’s Place (http://nancychristie.blogspot.com/), is exploring this very topic all month.
