I'm trying to figure out if Grammatika is simply an Elance-type site--that is, a bid site--but targeted solely at proofreaders and editors. Or, is Grammatika possibly a little-known resource for editing and proofreading jobs that I've been missing up to now?
From what I can see, Grammatika requires a $79 annual membership fee, which grants you a try at their editing and proofreading test. Once both of the requirements are met, only then can you "bid" (uh-oh, there's that word that means I'll be working for cheap) on editing and proofreading projects posted, supposedly, by magazine editors, publishers, and yes, even authors. Unfortunately, I can't view the project listings ahead of time to get a sense of the pay rates (I'm getting a 500 internal server error. I don't know if that's a true error, or because I'm not a member).
Two things catch my eye here, and make me think twice about Grammatika. One, it insists that it's used by magazines and book publishers to find freelancers. Well, those are certainly the groups I'd like to target. Two, it requires a test before membership, which essentially precludes some of those low-bidders (I think)!
Please leave a comment if you've used it, decided against it, or know of anyone's experience with it.
