Market Spotlight

Wednesday January 7, 2009

Today's Market Spotlight is Learning Through History Magazine.

LTH is a magazine that targets middle grade students. Its issues are published every other month, and focus on an advertised theme/era in history.

I believe LTH is a great market for beginning and intermediate freelancers for several reasons:

  • If you have few clips and a thin resume, that's ok- LTH only accepts full manuscripts, anyway. If you can write efficiently, this is a level playing field.
  • No guesswork. LTH posts which era they're working on, along with some prompts.
  • This is an established print magazine, making it a better clip than a failing start up or "come-one-come-all" website or ezine.

The publication does have a few shortcomings, though. You are writing on spec, and pay is lowish. However, they are worth a peek for this audience.

As always, share your publishing successes with me at freelancewrite.guide@about.com.

Thank you for mentioning this magazine as a market. As a former public school teacher, I’ve got some old “lessons” buried in my files that could easily become “educational articles” for the mag. Like you said, the pay may be low, but the fact that they are publishing you in a nice-looking clip could make a difference. Besides, if you already have the material assembled in your file cabinet (as former lessons, research, and thought), it can be fairly easy to whip up a short, yet meaty article for the magazine.

You’ve given me an idea to dig through my files to see if I can squeeze a bit more money out of them. Thank you so much!

Best regards,

Excellent! I do a lot of work in k-12 myself, but they love those who have been in the classroom.
