Share Your Website Here!
Hi folks. You may or may not know, but this website gets a decent amount of page views every month- somewhere in the 100,000 range, give or take. The blog here on the front page is certainly a huge chunk of that. Therefore, I'm inviting you to benefit from my traffic just a wee bit this week. How? Simply leave your website or blog in the comments section for your fellow writers to visit.
But wait, there IS a catch.
One of the questions I get most often is How do I start a website? This question is a doozy for me, because I feel that it's important for a writer to have an online portfolio, but I also know there are about a million ways to do so. Some people use their blogs to house their clips, others use an online portfolio service, and still others use a bona fide site. But how do they build it? Do they code it themselves? Do they hire a website service? Or do they use a website builder? How much does that cost? This is the kind of information I want to share with fellow writers. Help out a new writer, and get some traffic at the same time!

I have experience building web sites so I bought a very inexpensive domain through Godaddy.com. I think it costs me something like $50 a year. I used Dreamweaver to put up a basic site.
But… if I didn’t know how to build a site I would just build a Wordpress blog on my own domain and use the pages to put on the writer information.
Building a blog is still complicated, but there’s a lot of help on the web and it doesn’t add to the cost. Just the yearly domain cost is all you’ll pay.

Hi Allena,
I’ve been following your blog ever since I started out freelancing just a couple of months ago. No jobs in my kitty yet but I’m building my portfolio steadily by writing for market places.
The questions you’ve stated are ones I asked myself. Some of the answers I’ve worked out. For now, since I’m starting out and haven’t a gig to my name, I have decided to use blogspot for my writing blog and portfolio which are in seperate blogs. But I gave them uniformity by using the same template for both blogs so that when someone clicks on either, they’ll know it is an extension of the site they were just at.
I chose blogspot because you can tweak the template easily. And also because I know a bit of html and nothing about CSS which is why I didn’t choose wordpress. There are plenty of websites that have blog templates for free.
Setting up my blog and portfolio cost me nothing except time which I see as an investment in my business. I have decided not spend anything on my freelance business that I haven’t earned from it. For now, I am happy and satisfied with my writing blog and portfolio.
I hope this helps fellow writers who are just starting out.
I was lucky enough to have a son that is into “all things web” and a very good friend with talent for building sites. If not for them, I’d have gone with a godaddy domain (I did) and their website tonight program, which is inflexible, but pretty much point and click. Our wymj website 2.0 will be up in a week or two and it looks so much better than the current!
While I could build a fairly complex website, I chose vista print to easily match my business cards and have something customizable but easy to update quickly. For $20 a month I can put paypal buttons everywhere! I would advise looking into it for the busy writer, or the writer with no website building experience.
I think a great way to get some web presence is to join a site like Associated Content. Check it out! Visit me while you’re at it!

Hi Allena,
I started out with a blog, but then I hired a Web page designer to put up a splash page for my business. That cost an estimated $250, not including web hosting through Go Daddy. A year of free hosting (meaning an ad is placed above your Web page) costs $20 and you get an e-mail account with it.
It’s basic, but it is doing what it was meant to do until I get a more robust site up. I’m pricing that out right now. I don’t do it myself because I hate programing and I have a overflowing plate of things to do, so learning how to delegate the tasks I don’t like doing has been a great relief.
Thanks!

I’ve been freelancing part-time for about two years and don’t have a huge collection of published pieces yet, so I created a blog using WordPress (and the help of my tech-savvy brother). It’s been a great addition to my portfolio and it keeps me writing on a regular basis.

I am fortunate enough to have a Webmaster who is very good at building and maintaining a Website. I launched I Love To Write Day in 2002. Every November 15 people of all ages are encouraged to write something: a letter, a short story, an essay, start a novel, finish a novel…the possibilities are endless. Over 20,000 schools all across the country now celebrate ILTWD; and 9 Governors have officially proclaimed November 15 as I Love To Write Day in their states. Please visit http://www.ilovetowriteday.org and take a look. And please help spread the word. I do believe that without a Website ILTWD would not have reached such a wide audience.
Thank you.

A low-techie like me is clueless about how to create a site. It was created by my high-techie daughter and son-in-law. And yes, I realize http://www.julianblocktaxexpert.com is a tad pretentious for the title of a site. But to my surprise, there’s another Julian Block out there and he had already appropriated julianblock.com. My site includes information on how to order my book on tax tips for freelance writers.

As predominantly a travel photographer who also does a fair bit of travel writing I use two mediums. I have an on-line portfolio which contains clips at http://www.dymond.com.au and I have a blog page where I give out daily travel photography tips at http://pauldymond.blogspot.com. I find the two work in tandom with each other, although I know the main website is in urgent need of updating.
I, too, started with a blog. I didn’t have much creative work published yet, so I thought it would be a good reference point for my style and abilities. I haven’t been at it long, but I have learned a lot by watching other bloggers. My advice would be to find others whose writing you like, and pay attention to how they work. It is important to keep posting – no matter what your vehicle. People expect things to move fast and if you aren’t writing for a while you may lose their interest.
When I created the site the first time, I paid for a generic template. After I started using Wordpress for my blogs, I decided to also use it to build my site as well.
I have two: one for my proposal and technical writing business and the other for my freelance writing business.

I have little to no experience with site building, and when I put up my site, I had little to no moolah. I set up my domain with Go Daddy and traded services with a friend who is a Web developer. He and I have put together a nicely functional site using Drupal, a free software package that is super user-friendly and has tons of usability options.
What I love about my site is that I can make changes as needed and add content or function modules (such as a Web form or a blog) as desired. Though he’s always available to help, I don’t have to call my “Web Guy” every time I turn around. What’s not to like?

I joined a group blog, where we have a broad but consistent focus — “A Christian Worldview from Silicon Valley.”
Our setup is simple, using Wordpress on our church’s domain. Four of us write fairly consistently, with a couple of other occasional contributors. Our page rank has risen steadily due to the steady pace of our contributions and comments on the pieces.
Thanks, Allena, for the opportunity to post my site! I enjoy getting comments on what I write.

My site if for jewelry that I hand craft. I have a little bit of experience in graphic and web-design but I’m by no means an expert. I built my site using Yahoo Site Builder & Yahoo Merchant Solutions. They have great tools that you can adapt to your skill level. Their customer service is also excellent. I’m still building and adding to my site – but it’s already helped me to generate new business.
Having a website has been a great resource for me – I’d encourage everyone to put one up of their own!
The easiest and cheapest way to do it is to set up a blog. You can post your articles and label them accordingly. Blogger and Wordpress have user-friendly controls and features that writers can use efficiently.
Some writers buy a domain name and redirect it to their Blogger/Wordpress accounts.

I am interested in writing my family story. On the other hand I got into a web site through a friend who owns and opperates a message board called http://www.frontierfolk.net/mb
From there Windows Live invited me to make my own site and now I have two. The Poetry page on the included URL shows only two of my poems. Thanks for looking!
I’ve been blogging on blogger for two years now. One of my articles was “discovered” by a grad student at Purdue University they want to publish the story in a textbook. I’m very flattered to say the least! The story is called “Profile of a Vespa Girl” and it can be found on http://mels-cafe.blogspot.com/
I also just started another blog on wordpress that is dedicated to yoga. http://yogapages.wordpress.com/
Sorry I thought the website would show up. here are the two:

My website was built by my daughter who is a web designer using a Joomla template–it is easy to maintain and has stories and a pretty neat photo gallery, too.

It is: http://www.newportroundtable.com.

We used a graphic designer to create an eye-catching logo, and then a less expensive young web site designer to create our portfolio site. Posting articles can be a problem if the magazine does not offer a link or deliver a final pdf to us. In those cases, we now generally scan a hard copy of the first page of the article and post it. We provide readable text below the scanned page. This gives the reader a feel for the magazine design and verifies that the article appeared in the publication.
Thanks, Aileen! Love the idea of sharing the outlet here to promote myself and being able to share what I know as well to help others promote.:)

Hi,
I started to learn some basic html and then decided on choosing a reliable hosting company to host the website. I purchased an inexpensive guide to help learn the coding.
I’m a blog spotter and have found one simple template (denim) that I have dialed in the sizes required for graphics. The thing i like most is that with an old version of photoshop, I can design and customize my own sites. They are all similar, but unique as well allowing me to showcase the variety of topics I cover. Please check them out.

Hi, Allena…Enjoy your work.
I created a web site for no money using http://www.tripod.lycos.com to publish parts of my first narrative nonfiction book: “Havana Harvest…When Cuba Was Naughty!” Please visit my site at http://yonsuk.tripod.com to view
First created my site in FrontPage about 8 years ago. Most of it is now converted via Dreamweaver. There’s a link to my blog but I haven’t posted lately, since my host (Hostway) won’t install a comment-spam filter on their server. Since they’re expensive at $15.95/month, I’m not happy about that, even though their up-time is terrific. I’m looking to move at least the blog, when I get time to myself amid the crises of living these days.

Promoting a book includes many angles, the most important being word of mouth buzz. I could not ignore, however, the pundit’s suggestions to create a Web site that is content driven and provides an outlet to purchase the book.
I chose Site Build It (SBI). My HTML and CSS acumen is nowhere it needs to be in order for me to upload code for a site. SBI costs $299 per year and the company does more that host a Web site. The tools they provide are invaluable for someone whose HTML code skills hover just about Neanderthal status.
It is all about content. It is not about glitz. I highly recommend SBI and this is not a paid endorsement.
In addition to writing, I sell original graphic prints online. Please visit!
I paid a highly experienced web designer to create and maintain my site. He provided me with features such as an easily navigable admin panel that I wouldn’t have gotten had I gone with one of the cheap alternatives which, incidentally, weren’t really available when I started the site, four years ago.
Six years ago, I decided to launch SoundAffects.net, an online music publication featuring both up and coming and established artists and bands. It’s also served as a place for budding music journalists and photographers to develop their talent and gain clips.
I built my site by modifying an existing CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) template. I work as a user interface designer as my day job, so it was very easy to put together and customize for my own use.
If you search on “css templates”, several free templates come up. If you open the individual files, you can replace the text with your own words. Files can be opened in plain old Notepad, or you can download Notepad++. I also chose to modify graphical elements using a graphics program, but for writers needing a basic site without much coding, there is no need to modify the graphics.
I spent the majority of my time researching other writers’ websites, developing the content, and selecting which writing clips to highlight. I’m primarily a fiction writer, but just started delving in non-fiction. I think it is very important to have a website as a freelancer.
Allena, I’ve really been enjoying this blog for the past year! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to share.

Hello fellow copywriters,

I actually have three blogs and manage a website. One of the blogs is my random thoughts and just lets me connect with friends and family. Another is a research genealogy blog that I write for former residents of our little town. The third is a “leftovers” site called Stories Too Long. I post short stories, family stories, research, etc.- anything too long for my regular blogs. I do all of these through TypePad because I’m the least technical person in the world! My daughter has a scrapbook blog through them and she is happy with it. We’ve both been with them for about three years. I also manage the town website with the help of Altrue.com. If I ever get around to seriously writing again, I’ll post on one of my blogs. Mary Maurer
I’m in two minds about the value of blogs to a writer – or anyone for that matter. I have two that I post to moderately often.
http://grahamstorrs.blogspot.com is my writing blog – where I promote my personal brand as a writer in anticipation of having actual books to sell one day
http://graywave.blogspot.com is my personal blog – where I rant and have fun and amuse myself.
Between them, I’m only gettinga few hundred unique visitors per month – but, then, I’m not famous yet.
I built my website using WordPress. http://www.magicalplacesfineart.com is my personal website (I’m a writer and photographer). I also have an online photography magazine – which is really a WordPress blog that uses a magazine template – hosted at the same domain.
I’m planning a series of articles about building websites for photographers – equally applicable to writers. The first article will go online in a week or two.
Websites are one thing I have tried and tried to do, but still find very time-consuming and frustrating. A friend built mine in the end, much to my eternal gratitude, but even in the few months I’ve had it my writing work has increased. If you really can’t build one yourself, or get a friend to do it on a skills swap, I think it’s time to bite the bullet and pay for someone to do it for you. It should be a worthwhile investment.

With no previous experience, I built a website to promote my book with the program Kompozer. Kompozer is an open source tool, meaning it is 100% free and available for download on the internet. Advice appears now & then for those setting up a website for the first time to use Dreamweaver; it is in fact the #1 web design program, but be forewarned: it is extremely complex, and used more by pro website consultants and webmasters. Definitely overkill if you just want an effective but basic site. Kompozer will work just fine for that purpose.
Here’s the site I set up with Kompozer:
http://www.injuryafoot.com/
I also set up a blog for promotion and discussion; for the blog I used WordPress (wordpress.org). I went through BlueHost for hosting, which is about $80 a year. Great customer service so far. They also feature “one-click” installation of WordPress, which can save a new blogger lots of time getting started. For a free, non-hosted WordPress blog, you can go to wordpress.com. However, they have some stipulations about commercializing a blog using their free, hosted version. So advertising your services may be disallowed through wordpress.com, I’m not sure. Through wordpress.org, which you must have hosted, commercialization is permitted and is done far and wide. Also, tons of free templates, or “themes,” are made available by the WordPress community, so you should be able to find something you like for your blog’s appearance.
Anyway, here’s the blog I’ve set up with WordPress:
http://www.heal-your-heel-pain.com/about/
I bought a domain from Yahoo, hosting from Host Refugee, and put together my own site with some basic HTML. If you just want a very simple site to house your clips and give a brief bio, this is probably the easiest and cheapest way to do it:
http://buttontapper.com
As for my other site, Black Heart (http://blackheartmagazine.com), which is an online magazine of literary erotica, I had a friend do the design. Currently, that site is far too complicated to update properly, so I’m looking for a new template that I can use, probably something blog-like. There are plenty of people who do free or cheap blog designs that you can buy and install on your domain, so if you don’t want to bother with designing your own site, you can definitely hire someone. Elance is a good place to find tech types that you can hire for short-term projects, and you can set your own price.
I also am freelancing – read your newsletter faithfully! Learn a great deal! Thank you for the opportunity to link up – I am a complete novice at web design but my heart is in it – http://www.graceinthesouth.blogspot.com
I built my site using iWeb on my Mac. It is super-easy for the basic user who doesn’t have any coding skills, though it could be frustrating for the more advanced user who wants to be able to customize more.

I appreciate Teresa’s comment about finding a CSS template to use to build her site. Using word-based navigation instead of pictures allows the search engines to find your site. If you use a keyword connected to your writing, and the pages are keyword dense, meaning you use the same keyword several times, it helps browsers to find you.
Thank you for this opportunity to share our websites with your audience.
I, too, just began my freelance business earlier this summer (still have my day job). I have my website hosted by an individual for the customary annual rate. However, I am as non-techincal as you can be and needed help with posting my writing samples. So, I caved and spent more money (about $300.00) to have my portfolio added to my site.
I am in the process of having this done and I am hoping that it will increase my pipeline which will lead to more writing assignments.

I started a blog that I haven’t been able to keep up with for the past few weeks. I may be able to update it this week. I would appreciate any constructive comments critiquing my writing. Thanks. My blog site is: http://geologyrider.blogspot.com.
An online web presence is absolutely crucial if you are serious about your writing or any other business venture. To answer your question, I personally use GoDaddy.com because you can do it yourself or have them to design it for you. Having a website is more affordable than it used to be. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to develop one.
It’s a cost effective way to step up your game because now-a-days, a professional online resume could make a difference to landing writing assignments and to help validate your professional credibility. Hope this helps!

I’m at http://www.johnlisterwriting.com, which I built myself.
It’s hosted by UK2.net which I think costs me about $60 a year including the domain name and hosting.
I don’t have an advanced knowledge of web design, but figured out the basics of HTML and CSS in my previous job. I use Adobe Go Live to do it. The idea of the site is that it’s concise and uncluttered, which puts across the ‘brand’ of my writing.
Hi all,
My copywriting website is at http://www.jerrybullard.com
For my website I have used http://www.homestead.com which is website buidling site. They offer three ways to launch and build a website. You can choose from various templates, design your own or have them create your site for you. I designed my own with their easy to use tools and was up and running in about a day. The cost is about $150.00 per year and they register your domain name and host your site.
Best of luck to everyone.
With no previous experience, I built & launched a website to promote a book using the program Kompozer. Kompozer is open source, which means it is free and available for download on the internet. It is relatively easy to use, and the open source community provides online help. Compared to Dreamweaver, Kompozer is much less complicated, and all you need for a simple yet effective website. And it’s free.
Here’s my site built with Kompozer:

I am not a web designer. I would say that I have pretty much minimal skills in that department, but I figured out a way to not only set up my own web site quickly and easily, but also add mailing list capabilities so I could start to grow my subscriber list for my ezine and email alerts. I wrote up how I did it and am giving it away on my web site at homebusinessfromscratch dot com. Anyone can sign up for a free copy of my report. I’m sorry it doesn’t offer screenshots, as I was trying to keep the report under 20 pages to make it economical for people to print off. However, I do give very specific, step by step instructions. If you follow my instructions you can set up a web site almost exactly like the one I set up at homebusinessfromscratch dot com.
I am not at all Web savvy – and I’ve definitely never learned to code! However, a tech-guru friend suggested I use http://www.godaddy.com to put together my site (www.maggiemarton.com) because they have all the components necessary to build a good site. I purchased my domain for something like $10, then purchased hosting with them. The hosting package came with a subscription to their site developer page, which I’ve been using to keep my site updated. It’s actually really easy, but the drawback is that they run their own ads along the top. So far it has met my needs, though the ads are bothersome. I would recommend their service, or something similar, to anyone without much html experience because it simplifies the whole process, saving me a huge amount of time each week!
Hi,
Sharing your website is a very generous offer!
I spend most of my time running a 33 year old resume writing business called Appelbaum’s Resume Professionals, Inc. But I DO write free lance articles also – usually on career subjects. I wrote every word on my website, but I had professionals put it in place and Go Daddy is the host. Over the years, I have had the website redone by different people, and I have had more than one web host. You learn as you go.
With so many people losing their jobs, I hope my kind of writing can help.
I am new to blogging, 2+months, but I had no desire to moneitize my blog, so I went with one of the free platforms. I recommend either Wordpress or Blogger.
If you want to make money, I would go through and host on a different server. Perhaps get someone to code it for you, unless you are computer savvy like that. It takes a while to learn code if you are trying to run a business too. The sooner you can get it up, the better.
No matter what you chose to do, the biggest thing that I have learned is to network out the wazoo. This will help drive people to your site and it increases the chance that someone will see a product that they need.
Like I said, I don’t sell anything, but I do love to get comments. My blog is located at http://everydaythoughtsfromlife.blogspot.com
I am one of those people, who, if left a comment, will reply and 10 times out of 10, will go and check out the website of the person commenting. So come and enjoy and if you like, please subscribe to my feed.
I use my site for personal reasons, and to do a little practice writing; opinions and essays with an occasional product review thrown in. My suggestion for first time website people is to start a blog for FREE on any of the popular freeby sites; just to get used to it then you can venture out and purchase your own domain.
Hi,
I created mine several years ago through a referral to oneandone.com from a woman who used to write About.com’s freelancer newsletter (whose name currnetly escapes me). Oneandone.com provides a website builder that has served my basic website needs well, and it costs about $26 every six months. It’s not as flexible as I’d like, especially with the graphics, and the templates aren’t terribly easy to personalize. But the site is easy to use and to update, allows me to write all my own content, and provides much more professional-looking templates (despite the limited flexibility) than I or most inexpensive graphic designers could create. It’s definitely enough to meet my needs until or unless I start making a high enough income from freelancing that I can pay a solid designer without wincing at the cost.
Here’s my site (for nonprofit/business communications, marketing, and development writing/consulting):
http://www.bachwriter.com
I also have a separate site for my journalism and creative writing:
http://www.paulrevered.com
Feel free to provide feedback or ask questions.

Hi Allena,
Thanks for the invite. I’d been debating for a long time whether I should invest money in a website. I knew I should have one, but didn’t take the plunge until last month. I just set up something simple with my portfolio and a blog for readers to keep up with my projects. Fun! I also started a website for beginning writers called The Freshman Writer also a free site. http://www.thefreshmanwriter.wordpress.com. Thanks again.
I think writers should spend their time writing, NOT building websites (unless that is another service you offer). WordPress is the way to go. You have your blog, which encourages writing, and you can have separate pages just like you can with any other website. So I have my clips, bio, and contact info on separate pages with my blog as the primary attraction.

Hi Allena,
Thanks for giving us the opportunity for a little free promotion.
All the best,

Great advice and information! I use Bravenet – thank goodness for their Website Wizards – it is so simple to build your site and very inexpensive.

I started by building my own site with yahoo sitebuilder: http://www.feoshia.com. It was similar to what I used to do when I designed newspaper pages and I would say maybe medium difficulty. I update it maybe every couple of months to keep it fresh.
I also have a blogspot account where I blog about the Cincinnati suburbs and mention my other work at: http://www.cincyburb.blogspot.com
But how do they build it?
I built my site with Godaddy.com
Do they code it themselves?
I only used codes for the ads I placed on my blog.
How much does that cost?
for a website and blog I pay around 75 dollars a year. Not bad.

I created my website, http://www.rubysuitcase.com, using Wordpress (free) to manage my content (adventures in wine and travel). I wanted a more professional look and options for navigation, so I decided to get a specialty template which I bought for around $80 from http://www.revolutiontheme.com/. I bought webspace and my domain name for about $130 for two years from http://www.hostican.com/.
The whole process took an afternoon and I was able to start posting content to my webpage right away. If you visit, please let me know what you think!
Dear Allena:
It’s very kind of you to allow us this opportunity.

I found the easiest and least intimidating way for a writer to find an online audience is a blog. I use WordPress and have been pretty happy with it. I have looked into having a website built, but even for a fairly basic website that does what I need (allow for comments, etc) is going to cost me at least several grand and this freelancer just doesn’t have that kind of money.

Thanks for the link.
Hi, thanks for all of the good information. I blog and do freelance writing in both the health and pediatric arena, and am currently working on fiction for children. My blog and my website are resource and information sites for kids and their parents who are dealing with grief, loss, and serious or terminal illnesses. I also write health educational material. None of this pays enough to quit my nursing job, but there is always hope.
Warmly,
Terri

Thank you Allena.

I welcome contributions / comments to both!
One of the biggest catch22 is having enough money to make the website that you hope is going to make you money. You can go in on a job site and make you own (such as Medibistro), but you tied to what that job site does (for example if it is no more, neither is your site.
If you decide to do your own first website, go to an independent contractor rather than a company. They understand that most freelance writers are on a limited budget, so you may be able to work out a reasonable price and partial barter deal (for example), they get their name linked on your site or you do some writing for them if needed).

I have a blog through Today.com which pays for clicks and posts. My blog, Write to Earn at http://www.writetoearn.today.com, is my weekly tips for writers who are want to make some money writing for the Internet.
As previously mentioned, iweb is the way to go for mac users. I created my site using the program in a day. It is also very useful in managing blogs and there is a lot of support available for non-tech people. Have a look at my site:

Hi
I have been writing freelance for magazines in Australia for about 5 years, and over the last 12 months or so have thought about starting up a website. Unfortunately they all seem to cost a lot. Then one day I noticed one of my editors had a Blogspot address, so I checked it out and then went further into it, and saw that it was pretty easy to set up and best of all it is free! I added quite a lot of pics and articles in the first month, but that has cut back now. It is easy to add posts and pics, all you need is a bit of time.
I have had lots of good comments from friends about the site (I guess they have to be nice) but have also received one comment from an American reader – it was great to know that someone other than my family and friends had looked at the site!
Oops – my blog address didn’t show in my previous email – here is is – http://lifeimagesbyjill.blogspot.com/
hope you enjoy it.
oops – forgot to leave my blogspot – check it out – http://lifeimagesbyjill.blogspot.com/
hope you enjoy it

Hi Allena,
I’m just starting out my writing career, but have started a blog at http://writerstreehouse.com.
I purchased the domain and hosting from Godaddy.com and used WordPress to create the blog, as I have very little idea where to start in creating a webpage from scratch.
That said, I do believe the Newbie Club have just the sort of information a complete novice would require to get started creating their own website.
Sarah
Thanks for this opportunity, Allena. I’ll be checking out some of the blogs here!
I mainly use my blog to post little things. I want to create a site for all of my published clips, sort of a one stop lookie see.
Thanks, again!

Thanks for this chance, Allena.
I use my blog for little everyday things, and as a place for editors to check out my published work.
I will be checking out some of the blogs here!
Thanks, again.

I started blogging with Blogspot to let my audience decide when they want to read what I have to say. I publish the feed with Feedburner to make my text searchable. I have found that more readers find me from searches than actually subscribe. It’s nice to know that when I have something to say, there is someone out there who wants to listen (read).
We are seeking creative nonfiction, personal essays, literary true stories that together provide a pro-peace Jewish-American perspective on Israel (Canadian-Jewish voices also invited). The stories themselves can be as unique as each of our voices: from essays directly related to experiences in Israel or elsewhere with Israelis and Palestinians, to tales of peace work here in the U.S., or narratives about personal insight or transformation regarding the occupation and the Arab-Israeli conflict. Although we welcome the widest variety of submissions, each must be pro-peace and/or in opposition to the Israeli occupation and oppression of the Palestinian people. It must be free of prejudice or hateful language. Our goal is to engage, inform, and provide a forum for Jewish-American voices on peace.

Allena,
How very kind of you to offer up link love!!
About that site… I hired Goofy Girl Designs (design.goofygirl.org). She created a design I love and did just an amazing job of taking the vision I had and using her talents to make it become a reality.
I chose the self-hosted version of WordPress (under $100 a year for the hosting service and one domain is free). I continue to get compliments on how nice and professional my site is.

Thanks for the inside news from all of you! I have been a software designer for almost 30 years, so I thought I’d do my own. Then I thought I’d get a package (WordPress, Drupal, and TextPattern were my favorites). Then I found BlueHost.com has a script installer as part of their hosting package, so I could pick the software, and they installed it for me. That has been the easiest route, and still lets me get my fingers dirty when I want

This is a very interesting “discussion” and I find it amazing that, as professional writers, we’re suggesting that we create our own graphic design, write our own code and develop our own websites. While some of us may be truly skilled in these areas, isn’t it odd that we expect to sell our writing services yet we don’t consider buying the professional services of others? Would we try to do our own electrical wiring without really knowing how? Or have a cavity filled by someone who simply likes and knows a little bit about teeth? After owning my domain for several years, my website is now under construction and it would never occur to me to use anyone/anything other than professionals in design and web development to do the job. Some of these posts are examples of what many clients think, “Oh, I have a computer so I’ll just do it myself” or “Why do I need a writer when I can write my own newsletter, after all I write reports all day?”. And here we are doing the same thing to graphic designers and web developers. “Oh, I can use a free/cheap template to show my work” or “Why should I pay for it when my neighbor’s kid knows how to write code?” Friends, if you want a professional website to show your talent, then use a professional to create it. And compensate them fairly. I look forward to visiting the many links shared in this discussion to see how work is displayed. Thanks for sharing. And thanks for allowing me to share my thoughts.
Allena,
Nan has a good point. However, for beginning freelancers and other wordsmiths, investing in an online display (blog, site, whatever) is daunting; once the checks start coming in, sure. But before that, and especially in our current economy, I highly recommend a simple blog.
I recently hosted a member meeting for our local all-things-word organization (PEN; Professional Editors Network) just to give people a basic understanding of what blogging is all about and how social networking can benefit them professionally. I have two blogs, and one of them is mostly a creative outlet for my very dominant foodie self, but it also functions as a very accessible portfolio of food writing, an area I’m interested in.
Blogging has an array of benefits, the top two (in my book) being cost (free) and ease of entry (very, very, very). However, it’s not the only way to network online; social media outlets are explosive and continue to gain momentum; I utilize several applications, including Twitter, which allows users to post mini-updates.
Basically, my two cents are these: blogging is a great, non-daunting way to start out with an online presence, and social networking can pay dividends.
Thanks!
Erin

I started with Blogger but have been running wordpress on my own domain since April. I won’t go back! It took a while for me to learn how to set up a wordpress blog from scratch but my problems would have been worse if I actually had to build a site. Wordpress is a good halfway point.
I write a blog called The Little Things at:
http://www.amymossoff.com
It’s mostly about parenting and the other little things in my life that I value, as opposed to any big issues.
I’m an aspiring freelancer and the blog is my way of getting myself to write daily until I can start trying to market my work.
I opted to buy my own domain in case I use the site for clips in the future. You can get a domain for about $50/year or less. Wordpress is working very well for me as a blogging platform. If you do host your own blog, I have one important suggestion: back up your work!
http://debauchedsage.wordpress.com
Unfortunately only updated sporadically, since I have three deadlines at the end of this month and will be participating in NaNoWriMo during November. Keep checking for updates!
I had a friend who was a web designer. She convinced me I needed a site. Next thing I knew, I had one.

When I published my book, Take Ten, I built a website using Dreamweaver – I had experience from a previous web-writing job. But there are lots of site builders available now for anyone willing to fiddle with getting the look they want.
I love being able to update it myself!

I read your article and I am contemplating increasing traffic to my personal blog. Thanks for this opportunity. I have cutesy stories and student teenage concerns and young girl thoughts and reflections. I think a lot of young girl audience can relate to the articles. Open, read, and leave a comment! Thanks!

WOW! Thanks to everyone who posted their writing site and some hints for fellow writers looking to build sites. I’ve visited each and everyone of you!
(4)Jessie- I didn’t know VistaPrint could help with website? They are really cheap for print stuff.
(5)Rhetta (and others) I am not really a fan of AC as I know many editors will not go to an AC page to see your writing. They know exactly what it is. Please, new writers, don’t use AC as a “clip” it won’t work, except maybe for other content mills.
(9)John. November 15 is I Love To Write Day? Really? Sign me up!
(12)Anne, trading services is a GREAT idea for a writer who doesn’t want to plunk down megabucks.
(19)Good point: DON’T neglect your site. You never know who will wander by.
(21)and others- of COURSE you could milk your computer-savvy family and firends to get your writers site going!
(27)Ramesh- Thanks so much, so nice of you to say.
Everyone, Sorry if you submitted twice. It does take a sec for your comment to appear and there is no “verification” or “success” message. the network is aware of this.
Those who got stuck in Spam- sorry! I think I got you all out.
~Allena
I registered my domain with GoDaddy for $9.99 a year, and got a hosting plan for $43 a year. I then purchased my template for $25.00 at TemplateMonster.com.
Of course, being rather Web design illiterate, I bartered my services with a friend who is a Web designer. He helped me put the rest of the site together.
Thanks for allowing us to share our sites. It means a lot!
I just started my freelance writing career last December. With two paid blogging gigs going, I realized it was time to put together an online portfolio in order to grow my business.
Fortunately for me, my husband is a freelance web designer (www.WebCampOne.com), so he took the ball and ran with it.
I’m very pleased with the result. My site is simple and clean, but includes a portfolio with links to my published writing, as well as testimonials.
A website is a first impression, and I’m proud to have this site representing me to the world.
Thanks, Allena, for the free publicity. However, I hesitate to call mine a “website” – I refer to it as my “online portfolio” since web design is not my strong suit.
Darcy
Great thread! I love to see other writers’ websites and work. I actually love creating websites, but when it comes to writing, I went for the simplest and cheapest option – Blogger.
My writing profile
It is also very easy to maintain, and I simple add a post with a writing sample, or add a link to a published clip online whenever I need to update.
I also have a little blog site for writers, to try and swap ideas and thoughts about the writing life. Yup, I am a week behind in posts, but I am hoping for more people to start taking part soon and keep me on track!
The Write Questions
Oops, forgot to also plug my other site which combines my designs and writing work. This site covers the copywriting work I do, which I normally do in tandem with design for a newsletter, website or flyers.
Web Up
I tend to charge writer’s rate per job rather than designer’s rates, which seems to work well in my favour while still giving people a better deal on their website design.
I am constantly shocked at how much people pay for website design!
I am of the “build it and they will come” mindset when it comes to writing. I started my food blog–foodwoolf.com–one year ago on blogspot and have used my posts as an on-line writing sample. I spent the $75 bucks to buy the domain name I wanted and all traffic is forwarded to that site. Otherwise, the cost of starting my blog was nothing but time.
Now that foodwoolf.com has a significant readership, I have positioned myself as an on line presence. As an on-line publisher, I have parlayed myself into freelance writing jobs for magazines (both print and on-line) and am a freelance copywriter for an in-house marketing department of a food retailer.
Work begets work. In addition to maintaining my food blog, I am also a featured publisher at foodbuzz.com and contributor on numerous on-line magazine sites.
My recommendation to anyone considering writing a blog is to invest in lots of writing time and save some cash by using a free blog hosting site like blogger.
Starting my food blog was the best thing I’ve ever done for my career!
I used Apple’s iWeb website building program to put my site up. It’s pretty good and comes with a lot of different templates from which to choose so you can get creative with your site.
I also bought my name as a URL through Go Daddy and post my site there. I think I paid Go Daddy about $79 for my domain name and hosting for two years.
However, the drawbacks are that iWeb only comes on Macs and it can be a hassle getting to post a site to your own domain, as opposed to one with Apple’s me.com service. Still, it has been worth it to get a site up with my own name in it as it makes it easier for people to remember you when you pitch them.
http://www.rexcrum.com
I have basic blog and didn’t really think about setting up a website until I came to this post. I think that I will probably go with godaddy.com and see what kind of services they offer. I need to find something easy to set up and use because I’m not real good with this sort of thing
I would have been very happy to pay a professional web designer to build my website, but couldn’t afford it. I used GoDaddy’s Website Tonight, and while there was a lot of trial and error, I finally got it built. It is simple, but it works for me.
I originally thought to use a blog as a stop gap to an eventual website. It turns out I really like blogging, and I keep it all about writing & other literary stuff. Yet, primarily I think of it as an online place for editors to find links to some of my work and get a sense of who I am. Now that I’m developing a following who read it for the content, it just makes me aware that I really do need to eventually do a website as well.
I’m alternating between “do it myself” and “pay to get it done right”.
Ive not yet started a blog but instead have been fascinated with user generated content (like this ‘leave a comment’ format) where the website grows organically. Possibly because I am not as creative as the others Ive seen here.
My first attempt is close to completion:
http://www.whatmesay.com
Maybe when my design skills are better and my confidence increases, Ill be able to ‘put myself out there’ more.
BTY, great web sites guys.
I try to incorporate my writing into my personal blog. I will hire someone soon to do a re-design so that I have clear areas for the business side of my writing outside of blogging (magazine clips, press release samples and the like). I am having difficulty finding time to keep up with everything that I have to do so developing an entirely new site is a little too much for me.
I think, for the most part, that writers should stick with writing unless they have a true knack for designing or are going to do something simple, clean and professional.

In today’s market it can be hard for your company to stand out in the vast online crowd. That’s why we need employees for our organization with outstanding skills. And in the present scenario the global economy is going down and down tremendously. In such circumstances it’s very difficult to manage “needless reports, high recurring expenditures and unfriendly, unknowledgeable outsourced staff”.
What to do?
Better option is hire virtual employees and be tension free.

Hi. As the author of Crafting the Travel Guidebook I had to hire someone else to do my http://www.woodmontpress.com website because I’m a technobooby. It was set up so that I can add travel articles and other news myself–but that is done through buttons on the page.
However, I did start my own blog through blogspot. Even a technoklutz like me can write a blog. (I do however, have trouble inserting pictures so I don’t try too often).
I have noticed that travel writers, especially nascent travel writers, have blogs by the millions. I try to keep to the topic of writing and publishing on my blog–and only introduce a travel article once in a while. Interestingly enough, the article that got the most attention was about guidebook plagiarism. I put that up on Authors Den also. I do get ask to do consulting jobs every now and then and don’t know if it’s through my website or the blog.
It’s true that many writers are not graphically or technically oriented, but those who are have a definite advantage in today’s world. I’ve seen many blogs and websites blossom into books or long-term columnist gigs.

I’m a writer not a webmaster. But I needed to find a platform to capture the Internet market as magazines fall by the wayside. I found Site Build It! one year ago.
I now design websites with photos and video and sound. I still focus on content first and plug into all the tech stuff built in the system. It is a great way to jump into the opportunities of the Internet and be independent from high-priced net consultants and SEO gurus.
I now run an Internet business with the same passion for writing and without the hassles of the print media. Take a look at Nature Escapes.

I agree with those that say that starting a blog is a great way to go. Blogs are so easy to set up – you can do it in a matter of minutes. Search engines love blogs too.

Christian people share your stories here with other Christian people. Even better share your stories with those who are NOT. Be a light.
I love your site–it is always full of relevant information that I seem to need just about the time you post it! It’s uncanny!!! Of course, I am new to the freelancing world and know pretty much nothing, so whatever you tell me, I absorb like a sponge!!!
I invite readers to check out my website and blog. I also chose blogspot because it seemed pretty simple to navigate and for the most part it has been. I know I will be able to do more with it than I am, but for right now, it works okay. I just need to keep UP with it (don’t look now but I haven’t posted since NOVEMBER!!! :-0
I have never had a website before and a good friend did the bulk of the work on mine (www.debrasanders.com). I feel really blessed because I think it would have cost me a lot to get what I’ve got. I designed it out on paper for her and she just up and did the whole thing online.
Good luck to everyone out there!

good site
I really have enjoyed reading all of the various comments for this particular post.
At the moment, I am looking for a freelance WP theme designer/article writer who is looking to enhance their portfolio in exchange for promotion and publicity.
I have 30 domains for which I would like to have WP themes built.
If the prospective freelance WP theme creator is also a writer, this will be a big plus for them because not only will they receive publicity for the themes created, but any articles they choose to write will be additional traffic and exposure to their own websites and businesses.
I am allowing full creativity on the part of the potential freelance designer.
Think about the potential for your portfolio.
Serious inquiry only please.

This is my first ever website. I built it for free with Yola, and hopefully will expand it once i get enough views. I made as a place where people can anonymously post their poems, stories, or letters. There are so many things in life that we want to talk about and express and sometimes the only way to do that is through writing anonymously. Please check it out and write, or just look at what other people have to say, and if you would spread the word or link it somehow I would be eternally grateful.
Please check out itsanonymous.synthasite.com. It is a great way to express and discover your emotions and any traffic I can get or links would be amazing.
Apparently I do not know how to post links, so please click on my name to go to the website.
Dreamweaver and css are the best, just look at this.

Hi,
I and a friend have started a hobby web site three weeks back. We started the web site after 13 years of thinking and organizing our thoughts.
The web sit might have taken a few hours of work, and is hobbyist, but the thrill we get in organizing our thoughts and seeing them on web is enormous.

Our lessons, and those are early and in making, are feel the cause you want to represent, research a little and be willing to challenge your base assumptions, and you can do what you want. The web has enough resources (free) to get you started.
Regards,
Very interesting stuff. Good information when starting a website.

I admire web pages such as this because it allows our communities to all share what we have worked so hard on and see what others have worked on as well. Creating a website however, is tough work. With a little time and dedication, you’ll gain the confidence to exceed even more (:
Here, I have also tried to build a community of
confessions and honesty.

As a college student I was able to get an internship at a web design company to learn how to build my website. This may be unique, but my suggestion for everyone is to find someone you can talk to and learn from.
Thanks Allena for letting us post links.
I just created my blog about a week ago using google Blogger. It’s incredibly easy to use, but I haven’t been getting much viewers so hopefully this will help me out.
My blog contains my movie reviews, Oscar predictions, hopefully you will like it and leave some comments.
Thanks Allena.

I’m blessed enough to be able to design and code sites myself. I actually use both static and dynamic sites (like Wordpress-based sites).
If you’re not experienced in this, sometimes it’s just better to outsource the work to someone like me! (= You can then devote your time to other parts of your business, such as marketing.
Hey everyone, check out my website, thisandthatblogs.yolasite.com! We have had visitors from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the USA! Go there today and you will have a blast.
Allena,
Some time ago you and I had a lengthy discussion about finding time to write; we have three kids at home with two of them being special needs. As a result my wife and I came up with a schedule to help. The result? “Same Child, Different Day: One family’s experiences during the first year after a child’s autism diagnosis” http://thesamechild.blogspot.com.
I’ve looked far and wide for our conversations, to no avail. Regardless, I appreciate the help you gave and just want you to know.

I use a website builder for my website. This is not to say I don’t know how to code, but I use them for more of a convenience. The pages are easy to edit and update, and it’s all right there. I’m too impatient to work with a CMS, however even though their sole intent is to get people to easily manage their websites, I’ve found a website builder is best suited for a one person job. CMS are meant for teams in my opinion.
If you wanna see the power of a website builder, check out http://www.mmoheaven.com. The website builder mainly does the layouts, but I made the template myself. It’s nothing too fancy, but the point of my website is ease of use.
here i am, a year later, after ranting in this thread about using professionals to create websites rather than trying to do it ourselves (as professional writers).
i’m happy to say that since then, i’ve created my website using a professional designer and a professional developer. what a great journey!
i’ve also started a creative blog using wordpress since my main freelance writing work is for commercial clients.
please feel free to check them out. leave some feedback. and, above all else, keep writing.

Can someone just review my website? Thanks?
I’m not sure you can say it’s good or not.
HEY! nice but next time.
Drupal is a powerful website CMS. It’s not a website builder, it’s not anything similar to WYSIWYG. It’s an advanced free open source project that has a large growing community. I just started making my website roughly 3 weeks ago, and here’s what I got so far.
This is my website. http://www.iommo.com
If you know simple html and php, you’re on your way from making a website like I did. CSS helps a lot!
