Oh, No, Not ANOTHER Magazine I'm Published In!
Ok, stop shooting darts at me with your eyes, I'm just kidding.
You see, in the mail today I received courtesy copies of a magazine I'd been published in. When I moaned, my husband looked at me like I was crazy. I had to explain to him that the project isn't over when you get the published article. Instead, there are now a couple more things I have to add to my long To Do list:
- Scan the article, pop it into my portfolio, and put it online.
- Start dealing with getting paid. (Do I have to write an invoice? Do I have to bug somebody?
- Reconnect with the editor in hopes of more work.
- Check the masthead for other freelancers I may know (network!)
So, you see, getting your tear sheets isn't necessarily the end of the project. There are Seven Essential Steps to Follow After You Are Published.
Back to work!

funny, when I first reread the title, I was like “man, people are going to think ‘what a snob’!” lol. Yeah, the work is never ending! I forgot to mention that I also keep a whole copy of the WHOLE magazine in a binder, although now that I think about it, I have never used those for anything.
Dear Alena:
Congratulations, and thank you for a very informative and helpful post, with a link to a very important article.
May I share this link with readers of my Published & Profitable blog? http:blog.publishedandprofitable.com.
I love your idea of stressing that “the end is often the beginning.”
Congratulations on including the link to a genuinely useful article I wish I had read years ago!
Roger C. Parker
Roger, I am honored to have you share- of course, of course!
Hi Allena – Don’t forget to email a thank-you to your sources and attach a pdf of the article. Thank goodness for email; it would cost a fortune to mail every source a copy of the article. – Valerie Russo
Valerie! Oh my goodness, that one is VERY important- thank you!
A good comment from Valerie about, “thank-you to your sources and attach a pdf of the article.” That is very important. One idea to go along with that, just before the magazine is due out, email the assistant editor or the individual at the magazine you have corresponded with. Request a copy of that magazine issue be sent to one or two of those major sources, or individuals covered in the article. Provide the person’s name and full mailing address. All the magazines I have made such requests have done so. Your sources really appreciate having the complete magazine arrive at their home.
Hi alice, sorry, your comment got stuck in spam for a week
